How Can Companies Help Remote Workers?
In today's society working from home or flexibly is becoming more common. But how can companies ensure their remote workers are happy and that their skills are up to date?
It has been found that the major concerns that remote workers have are:
- being left in the dark as to how the company is going
- isolation from other workers
- feelings that they will be looked upon as "skiving"
- the lack of IT support
There are ways to overcome this.
Shared work spaces will give remote workers the chance to network and socialise with other remote workers. Companies can use such spaces to provide advice and training to all remote workers and also keep communication open to them. Meetings as often as possible with management will help remote workers keep "in the know". Other methods of communication such as teleconferencing and online forums should also be explored.
By empowering employees to work remotely it would be in the company's best interest to give the employee a clear set of objectives, goals and targets to meet in order to sustain the remote workers motivation and enthusiasm. Communication is the key to success for all concerned. Effective communication processes can ensure a happy, contented and useful network of remote workers.
